Hi, I’m River.

I got interested in personal finance after helping a loved one deal with the debt that came with her gender transition.

I became a financial advisor at a traditional wealth management firm in 2017. Working there is part of what radicalized me against capitalism and American systems of finance.

I started my own financial planning firm in 2019, and since then, my services have evolved along with my anti-capitalist politics.

I’m definitely not a traditional financial planner anymore!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Not anymore!

Instead, I offer education and coaching. Check out my services page to learn more.

  • The fiduciary oath is for financial advisors, and I am no longer a financial advisor.

But I still hold myself to an important standard: I do not get paid by anyone except my clients. So you’ll never have to worry if I have a conflict of interest.

  • I’m happy to work with anyone who can use my pronouns correctly, and who agrees that white supremacy & capitalism are the problem here.

Most of my clients tend to be queer people, with leftist politics and therefore complicated feelings about money, age 25-50, with net wealth in the negatives up to $1M, with household income between $0 - $250K.

About half of my clients are white, and half are people of color. Many of my clients are neurodivergent and/or otherwise disabled. Many of my clients have non-traditional jobs, living situations, and family structures. Some of my clients have past experiences with housing instability and other forms of economic violence.

  • Maybe! It’s up to you to determine if it feels like a good use of your limited time, energy, and money to invest in your money knowledge, skills, and tools right now. Sometimes that is the case, and I’d love to be of help! Book a free Fit Check with me so we can talk through whether any of my services are a good fit for you.

I have some recorded workshops available on this page that you may or may not find helpful, such as the pay-what-you-want workshop How to Live Your Life While In Debt

Sometimes it makes more sense to use limited time and energy to only focus on ways to bring in income. If you are looking for resources about how to bring in money in a way that's better suited to your needs, brain, and body, I recommend the free workbook + podcast "Have a Nice Life" for pragmatic, class-conscious, and disability-friendly career advice.

Also, if you might benefit from state benefits or support from nonprofits, I recommend FindHelp.org as a starting point to learn what might be available to you!

  • Unfortunately, no. You want to look for an accountant, enrolled agent, or other tax preparer! I have a few suggestions for queer tax professionals here.

  • No, that’s not a service I offer. I know some other queer, left-leaning financial advisors who might be able to help - check out this list!

  • The vast majority of my finance expertise is based in USA financial structures, and all of my services are currently geared toward folks who are operating within those structures.

I am exploring what I can offer that isn’t rooted in the US, or not in any particular country. Services and resources along those lines will probably be much more focused on feelings and values rather than financial literacy and financial planning.

  • If you agree that racial capitalism is real and is bad, I have a cool resource to point you to! Email me at river@beintentionalfinancial.com and/or book a virtual coffee chat with me.
